Hochschule für Gesundheit Bochum

University of Applied Sciences Bochum | Department für Angewandte Gesundheitswissenschaften | Department of Applied Health Sciences, Physiotherapy

Our university

Hochschule für Gesundheit (hsg Bochum) is a University of Applied Sciences located in Bochum, North-Rhine Westphalia. hsg Bochum is part of the Health Care Campus North-Rhine Westphalia.

The university was founded in 2009 and is the first state-run university for health professionals in Germany. There are about 1,500 students enrolled in 14 degree programs, for instance, Occupational Therapy (B.Sc.), Physiotherapy (B.Sc.), Midwifery (B.Sc.), Health and Diversity Studies (B.A.), Health Data and Digitalization (B.A.), Evidence-based Nursing Practice (B.Sc.), Physiotherapy Sciences (M.Sc.), Education of Health Professionals in Nursing (M.A.) and Health and Diversity at Work (M.A.). Three departments (Department of Applied Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, and Department of Community Health) offer these degree programs. Special features of the hsg Bochum are a modern didactic concept, the close link between theory and practice, an extensive network with partners offering internships and intensive support provided to students while studying. Early in the program students of hsg Bochum gain practical experience, which is closely linked to acquiring theoretic knowledge. They work in small groups, attend practical exercises in skills-labs and seminars. When students conduct their internships with practice partners of hsg Bochum, they can gather their first hands-on experience and are supported in developing their practical skills. Another advantage of this close collaboration is the fact that students get in contact with their future employers.

Our role in the project

The hsg will provide support with their knowledge of digitalization in health literacy (HL). All involved teachers and professors have at least five years of extended experience in (interprofessional) teaching and learning in higher education, research, digital health solutions, conceptualization of handbooks and their implementation. The overall work for developing IO2- Health Literacy courses (HLC) will be coordinated and managed by the hsg. The analysis of the existing curricula of the partner HEIs showed that the courses related to acquiring health literacy competencies in the bachelor physiotherapy education do not adequately meet the requirements needed to efficiently communicate and to provide a high quality health service to clients of diverse groups. Therefore, based on the contents of the HL Framework, and the specific expertise of each HEI, a set of courses will be established within this IO.

Our role in the project

In the HELPE Project the project team of the Netherlands will share their expertise and experiences on the topic of health literacy to build a health literacy theoretical framework together with all project members (intellectual output 1). This will finally result in a scoping review, which will give an overview of health literacy competences, health literacy trainings/interventions that are described in physiotherapy education in the literature. In addition to this assessment instruments addressing health literacy competences in physiotherapy students and clients will be summarized. All this information will give input for the development of all intellectual outputs.

University of Applied Sciences FH JOANNEUM / Institute for Physiotherapy

Our university

Our University is only 25 years old, but it keeps a traditional spirit starting with its Name. FHJ was named after Archduke Johann of Austria (1782-1859), who was one of the most innovative figures of that time and who made a number of innovations, many of which still impact our life here in Styria. In line with this spirit FHJ offers students to “study their dreams” in a broad spectrum of modern educational programs- from engineering, over media & design, to health studies. The practice-specific courses are designed with a view to meeting current international, social and technological challenges, with special attention to interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Department of Health Studies combines a client-oriented approach with innovative research. The bachelor’s degree program Physiotherapy is provided as a full-time program with 180 ECTS, for 6 semesters. A high priority is given to various scientific activities which enable to adapt to the changing dynamics in society, technology and health care. Research areas in the department are related to developing evidence-based innovative diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, health services and innovative training concepts for healthcare professions, and health promotion and prevention strategies.

Our role in the project

FHJ acts as the coordinating HEI of the project, our team contributes to development of all Intellectual outputs. The key expertise area for the project includes project-based learning, related to health promotion and health preventive activities as well as research-related lectures. Evidence-based practice is essential part of our Physiotherapy curricula. Further expertise in the project include patient counselling and education, clinical reasoning and extensive working-life cooperation activities.
